The Opportunity Canterbury website and its associated jobs board is a specialised job website aimed at attracting skilled workers to Christchurch to support the rebuild as well as the growth of the key sectors in the regional economy. The website supports the functions of the Canterbury Skills and Employment Hub which employs dedicated Skills Brokers (administrators of the website) who facilitate the matching of job seekers based in New Zealand.
This website is operated by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
2. Amendment of terms and conditions
As Opportunity Canterbury website and the Canterbury Skills and Employment Hub operate in a changing commercial, technological and regulatory environment, we may amend these terms and conditions from time to time. Unless otherwise stated, amendments will be effective immediately upon posting of the amended terms and conditions on this Website. You are responsible for ensuring you are familiar with the latest terms and conditions. By using this website you are deemed to have agreed to these terms and conditions, as may be amended from time to time.
3. Control of User Information
Each registered user (an “Employer” or “Job Seeker”) has control of their account including the ability to update and remove information and deactivate their account.
We strongly recommend that your user name and password remain confidential. Users can request that their password be reset.
We reserve the right to remove any account, profile or material posted by users which we deem to be misleading and/or inappropriate and/or unacceptable (see clause 11 further below).
4. Employer – Information Sharing
Information posted by Employers obtained from this website will be treated as confidential and used for the purpose of reporting to key stakeholders only. Your vacancy details will be utilised for the sole purpose of matching you with a job seeker on the Work & Income and/or Opportunity Canterbury databases. This includes carrying out a labour market check for immigration-related purposes.
We use email as a means of receiving feedback from our users and we may email you to seek feedback about our services and relevant information.
5. Job Seeker – Information Sharing
Information posted by Job Seekers which Opportunity Canterbury obtains from this website will be treated as confidential and used for the purpose of reporting to key stakeholders only. Your profile/resume details will be utilised for the sole purpose of sharing with Employers who have matching job vacancies.
6. Access to Employer Information
The Employer’s profile and any job advertisements it posts are publicly available for viewing. All other information held in the Employer’s user account is private and accessible only by the Employer.
7. Employer Registration with the Opportunity Canterbury Website
In order for jobs to be registered with the Opportunity Canterbury website, the Employer must first register on the website and provide some brief information about itself. The Hub will check that the registration is in relation to a bona fide employer, and may cancel a registration if not reasonably satisfied. Once an Employer is registered, it may add jobs at any time.
8. Job Listings
Job listings are valid for 30 days, and must be for an actual individual job (and not an expression or request for interest)that is based in the greater Canterbury area, New Zealand. For the avoidance of doubt, the Greater Christchurch area covers Christchurch City Council, Selwyn District Council and Waimakariri District Council.
Employers may list multiple vacancies. Employers may also use vacancy listings to recruit for multiple employees for the same position by cloning the posting, providing that the terms and conditions for each appointment are identical. Cloning the posting creates an unique vacancy number, which the Skills Brokers use for subsequent communications, particularly with Immigration NZ.
9. Job Seeker registration with the Opportunity Canterbury Website
In order to access the jobs listed by Employers, Job Seekers must register with the Jobs Opportunity Canterbury website, and provide some brief information about themselves. Once registered, Job Seekers may post up to three resumes at any one time and they are each valid for 90 days.
Job Seekers are able to browse the available listed vacancies and to submit applications direct to the Employers.
10. Access to Job Seekers’ Information
The Job Seeker’s profile and any activated or inactivated resumes are available to view by Skill Brokers only. Resumes are valid for 30 days. All other information held in the Job Seeker’s user account is private and accessible only by the Job Seeker. Job Seekers may update or correct their personal information at any time.
Skill Brokers only have access to all registered Job Seekers’ profiles and activated or inactivated resumes. All Job Seekers have immediate access to jobs that are listed with alerts where the job matches their self-identified skill sets. No Job Seeker has access to information on another Job Seeker.
11. Unacceptable use
You are prohibited from posting or transmitting to or from the website any material that is illegal, obscene, abusive, defamatory, threatening, infringing of intellectual property rights, invasive of privacy or otherwise injurious or objectionable.
The purpose of the website is to help match available Job Seekers with listed vacancies for Employers. You are prohibited from using Jobs Opportunity Canterbury website’s facilities to advertise products and services to registered users. Any such use will be considered to be spamming and deemed unacceptable.
Any user found to engaging in unacceptable use will be asked to cease such use. Further breaches will result in the cancellation and removal of the relevant user’s account.
12. Co-operation with authorities
We will co-operate fully with any law enforcement authorities or court order requesting or directing the agencies responsible for the Hub to disclose the identity or locate anyone posting any material in breach of clause 11 above. We will release account and other personal information only when we believe release is appropriate for legal compliance and law enforcement (including to government agencies with statutory law enforcement responsibilities); to facilitate court proceedings; enforce or apply our terms and conditions; or protect the rights, property, or safety of Jobs Opportunity Canterbury, our users, or others. Government agencies with statutory functions enabling them to request data from us includes but is not restricted to Police, IRD, the Ministry of Social Development, the Tertiary Education Commission, the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Registered users of the website can contact Opportunity Canterbury to ask whether such information has been provided.
13. Facebook and LinkedIn
It is possible to register with Jobs Opportunity Canterbury using your LinkedIn or Facebook account. This simplifies the registration process by using information available from your LinkedIn or Facebook profile to complete your registration. This does not affect the privacy of your information. We recommend that you read those sites’ privacy policies.
All user information is stored at a secure site. However please note the public and restricted access to particular user information as outlined in clause 6 above.

Links to third party websites are provided for informational purposes only and do not imply an endorsement by Jobs Opportunity Canterbury of that website, its content or views.
16. Website usage information and Privacy Statement
The Opportunity Canterbury website uses Google Analytics to collect information on website usage. The information collected is managed and used only by Jobs Opportunity Canterbury. These statistics are used to better tailor this website to our customer’s needs, and to report to the relevant government agencies’ on throughput and general outcomes. Reporting will not include individuals’ personal details. No statistics are collected or stored about individual users of this website.
17. Standards of Integrity and Conduct
Government employees who participate on the website are reminded of their responsibilities under the Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
By registering on this website, all Employers and Job Seekers undertake to provide accurate information that is not misleading. Opportunity Canterbury does not guarantee the accuracy of the information provided on this website. Any use of this information is at your own risk.
We strongly recommend that:

- Job Seekers check the terms and conditions of any job offer and ensure that they sign a written contract of employment with their employer.
